Yello – electronic Band

Beschreibung

Yello is a Swiss electronic music band formed in Zürich in 1979. For most of its history, the group has functioned as a duo consisting of Dieter Meier and Boris Blank. A founding member, Carlos Perón, left the group in 1983.

The band's music is characterised by the use of unconventional sampled sounds and a strong emphasis on rhythm. Meier typically provides vocals and lyrics, while Blank is responsible for composition and production. Among their best-known singles are "Oh Yeah" (1985), which has been featured in numerous films and television programmes including "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", "The Secret of My Success", "Uncle Buck", and "The Simpsons", and "The Race" (1988), which reached number 7 on the UK Singles Chart. The band has released 14 studio albums since 1980.

Yello was formed in the late 1970s by Boris Blank (keyboards, sampling, percussion, backing vocals) and Carlos Perón (tapes). Dieter Meier (vocals, lyrics), who worked as an investor and gambler, joined after the founders decided a vocalist was needed. The name Yello is a neologism derived from Meier's phrase "a yelled Hello".

The band's first release was the 1979 single "I.T. Splash". Their debut album, "Solid Pleasure", which included the original version of "Bostich" later expanded into a dance single in 1981, was released in November 1980. Their first music video was produced for "Pinball Cha Cha" in 1981 and was later included in a 1985 video exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In early 1983, shortly after the release of "You Gotta Say Yes to Another Excess", Perón left the group to pursue a solo career.

The album "Stella", released in 1985, reached number 1 in Switzerland, becoming the first album by a Swiss group to top the Swiss album chart. It also reached the top 10 in Germany and achieved gold certification. The single "Oh Yeah" from the album brought the band international recognition after being used in the 1986 film "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and later in "The Secret of My Success". It was released as a single shortly afterwards and became the band's only entry on the US Billboard charts, peaking at number 51, and reached number 9 in Australia.

In 1988, the single "The Race" from the album "Flag" reached number 7 in the UK Singles Chart, becoming their highest-charting UK single. It was also featured in the film "Nuns on the Run". In May 1990, Yello performed at the World Music Awards in Monaco, where they received an award for Best-Selling Swiss Group.

In 1990, the group composed music for the film "The Adventures of Ford Fairlane".

A tribute remix album, "Hands on Yello", was released in 1995, featuring remixes by artists including Moby, The Orb, Carl Craig, Carl Cox, The Grid, and WestBam.

In 2005, several of the band's early albums, including "Solid Pleasure", "Claro Que Si", "You Gotta Say Yes to Another Excess", "Stella", "One Second", and "Flag", were re-released with bonus tracks as part of the Yello Remaster Series.

A documentary about the band titled "Electro Pop Made in Switzerland", directed by Anka Schmid, premiered in Zürich in September 2005.

In 2007, Yello was commissioned to produce music for the launch of the Audi A5 at the Geneva Motor Show and for the vehicle's associated advertising campaign.
