History: The band was formed by Sono, the former vocalist of Jeniva. When Jeniva disbanded on October 14, 2006, Sono and fellow Jeniva drummer Yuu began working on their new band. All the members were already chosen before Jeniva finished disbanding. The name of the band was kept a secret until 23rd of February, when Yuu finally announced that it was Matenrou Opera, inspired by the anime "Blood+". Their first single was alkaloid showase, released at their secret first live on April 28th at Urawa Narciss.
On October 30th, Matenrou Opera announced guitarist Mika and keyboardist Karen would be leaving the band. While the news surprised many fans, the decision had apparently been long time coming, and they also announced that replacements had been taken care of. The last live with the original members was held on November 17th at Ikebukuro Cyber. It was not, however, until halfway through December when the names of the new members were announced: the new guitarist was Anzi, formerly of Sylphid, and the new keyboardist was 彩雨 (Ayame), who used to perform under the name soh in Ry:dia. Around the same time when the new members joined, it was also announced that Matenrou Opera would join the independent label Sherow Artist Society, owned by fellow visual kei star KAMIJO.
In 2008, Matenrou Opera landed a European tour with Versailles. The tour consisted of a total of six lives in Sweden, Finland, Germany, France and Spain, with the band gaining many adoring fans along the way. On May 6, 2010, Matenrou Opera announced they were going major and signed on with Warner Music, and later King Records. Their first major debut mini-album "Abyss" was released on December 22, 2010 in two editions. They also changed their logo and made a new website. Since then Matenrou Opera has released over fifteen singles, eight albums/EPs, and five compilation albums.
On May 15, 2016, guitarist Anzi announced he would be leaving the band due to “differences in consciousness and belief”. He has since played as supporting guitarist for KAMIJO, and has also launched a solo career. In 2018, drummer Yuu regretfully announced his retirement from the music scene due to pain from occupational hand dystonia. He has since returned to his hometown in Uenohara, and works as a PR ambassador for the local Uenohara food scene under the name "Tamajimaru". Anzi's replacement was guitarist JaY, who had been playing as a supporting guitarist for the band since 2016, however he departed from the band in 2020 to work on some personal projects. Matenrou Opera's permanent replacement drummer was announced January 2019 as Hibiki, who had occasionally covered for Yuu in 2018 prior to his retirement. In May 2022, it was announced the replacement guitarist would be Yusuke Hiraga, who had been playing as a supporting guitarist since March 2021.
In 2018 frontman Sono also announced a new solo project, 運命交差点 (Unmei Kosaten).
