Marc Smith is a hardcore and freeform DJ and producer from Scotland. Active since the mid-1980s, he is regarded as a legend in the UK rave scene, known for his high-energy sets, technical skills, and dedication to hardcore music.
Smith's journey began in 1985 when he started mixing hip-hop in his bedroom, collaborating with local rappers, beatboxers, and breakdancers. In 1987, at 17 years old, he secured his first major residency at The Warehouse in Glasgow, an early acid house venue. This led to further residencies at The Club Hacienda and Euphoria @ Heaven, where he played tracks such as "Voodoo Ray" and Joey Beltram's "Energy Flash." His fast mixing and turntable skills quickly made him a well-known figure in Scottish club culture.
By the early 1990s, Smith was at the forefront of the growing rave scene. He was voted Scotland’s No. 1 DJ by Clubscene magazine for six consecutive years and won multiple other awards, including Best Scottish DJ at the Irish Dance Music Awards and on Tom Wilson’s "Stepping Out" show on Forth FM. His high-energy sets became a highlight at legendary events such as Holocaust, Technodrome, Amnesia, World Party, Awesome 101, and Earthquaker. From 1993 to 1995, he held a prized residency at Rezerection, further cementing his place in Scottish rave history.
Throughout the late 1990s, Smith continued performing at major events across the UK, including Hardcore Heaven and Vibealite. During this period, he collaborated closely with fellow Scottish DJ Scott Brown, co-founding Federation Records and producing remixes for Brown’s Evolution label. He also worked with artists such as Ultra-Sonic, TTF, Chemical Mass, El Bruto, and Ultimate Buzz.
In the early 2000s, Smith relaunched his label, Notorious Vinyl, while maintaining a busy schedule of performances at events such as HTID, Uproar, Slammin Vinyl, and the Tidy Weekenders. He also played international gigs in Australia, Austria, Holland, Canada, and New York.
Unlike many DJs who followed mainstream trends, Smith remained dedicated to his unique style of high-energy, party-driven hardcore. His DJ sets, known for their speed, diverse track selection, and powerful stage presence, continue to stand out in the scene. Blending uplifting synths, massive vocal anthems, and even drum and bass influences, his performances remain some of the most explosive and energetic in the genre.
With over two decades at the top of his game, Marc Smith has solidified his status as a true rave legend and entertainer, known for his notorious energy and unwavering passion for hardcore music.
