Entombed is a Swedish death metal band formed in 1987, originally under the name Nihilist. The band is considered an early pioneer of Scandinavian death metal, noted for its distinctive "buzzsaw" guitar tone, which distinguished it from American death metal. By the early 1990s, their sound incorporated elements of garage rock and hard rock, a style later described as death 'n' roll. Alongside Dismember, Grave, and Unleashed, Entombed is often cited as one of the "big four" of Swedish death metal.

The band originated from Nihilist, formed by drummer Nicke Andersson, guitarist Alex Hellid, and bassist Leif Cuzner in 1987. After several temporary vocalists, L.G. Petrov joined as vocalist, and Uffe Cederlund as a second guitarist. The band recorded demos that would later appear on their debut album. Following internal tensions, the band changed its name to Entombed. Their debut album, "Left Hand Path" (1990), established them as a prominent Swedish death metal band, followed by "Clandestine" (1991), both featuring the characteristic buzzsaw guitar sound. During a period when Petrov was temporarily absent, Andersson performed vocals, and Johnny Dordevic joined for touring.

Petrov returned, and in 1993 Entombed released "Wolverine Blues", blending death metal with hard rock and heavy metal influences, marking the death 'n' roll style. In 1998, founding drummer Nicke Andersson left the band and was replaced by Peter Stjärnvind. Subsequent albums included "Same Difference" (1998), "Uprising" (2000), "Morning Star" (2001), and "Inferno" (2003), which was the last to feature Cederlund, bassist Jörgen Sandström, and Stjärnvind. Nico Elgstrand joined on bass in 2004, and Olle Dahlstedt replaced Stjärnvind on drums in 2006. "Serpent Saints – The Ten Amendments" (2007) featured a return to traditional death metal influences.

In 2010, Victor Brandt joined as bassist, and Elgstrand moved to guitar, restoring the two-guitar lineup. In 2013, Entombed performed with the Sundsvall Chamber Orchestra at the Nordfest festival. Legal disputes over the band’s name led to the formation of Entombed A.D. by Petrov, Dahlstedt, Elgstrand, and Brandt in 2014, while Hellid, Cederlund, and Säfström performed "Clandestine" with orchestral accompaniment. Entombed reunited in 2016 with Hellid, Andersson, and Cederlund, joined by Robert Andersson on vocals and Edvin Aftonfalk on bass, performing anniversary shows.

Former vocalist Lars-Göran Petrov died in 2021. Entombed performed at Gefle Metal Festival in 2022 with Hellid, Andersson, Cederlund, and Sandström, featuring multiple guest vocalists and a guest drummer. In March 2025, the band announced they were working on new material for their first album in nearly two decades.

Entombed is recognized for its buzzsaw guitar tone, achieved using a Peavey amplifier and Boss HM-2 distortion pedal, and is credited as an influence on bands such as Black Breath, Nails, Early Graves, and Trap Them. Their style evolved from early American death metal influences to incorporate hard rock and other elements, establishing a legacy as one of the leading acts in European death metal.
