Ayumi Hamasaki (浜崎あゆみ, Hamasaki Ayumi; real name 濱﨑 歩) is a Japanese singer-songwriter, composer, record producer, actress, model, and entrepreneur. She is widely recognized as one of Asia’s most influential and best-selling artists, often referred to as the “Empress of J-Pop”.

Born on October 2, 1978, in Fukuoka, Japan, Hamasaki began her entertainment career in the mid-1990s, appearing in television dramas and modeling before turning to music. She debuted under Avex Trax in 1998 with the single “poker face”, discovered and mentored by producer Masato “Max” Matsuura. Her first studio album, A Song for ×× (1999), topped the Oricon charts and established her as a defining figure of late-1990s and early-2000s J-Pop.

Throughout her career, Hamasaki has written all her own lyrics and frequently contributed to composition and production. She has released over fifty singles, numerous remix and compilation albums, and more than eighteen full-length studio albums, with cumulative physical and digital sales exceeding 50 million copies in Japan alone — making her the country’s top-selling solo and female artist, and one of the most commercially successful musicians in Asia.

In 2008, Hamasaki revealed that she had become completely deaf in her left ear due to an inoperable condition, and in 2017 she reported progressive hearing loss in her right ear. Despite this, she has continued performing and recording, writing that “the stage is where I belong — it’s the only place I truly exist”.

Recent years have seen continued creative activity and touring. In 2024 she released the singles “Aurora” (theme for Azur Lane’s anniversary event) and “Bye-Bye” (featured on Minna no Uta). In April 2025 she released “Mimosa”, used as the theme for Fuji TV’s drama Second to Last Love (Season 3).

Her I am ayu Asia Tour 2024–2025 included performances across Japan, Hong Kong, Taipei, and Singapore — the latter marking her first solo concert in the country on July 5, 2025. The tour reaffirmed her enduring legacy as a live performer with a dedicated international following.

Known for her introspective lyricism, ever-shifting visual style, and strong artistic independence, Hamasaki remains one of the defining voices of modern Japanese pop music.
