Beyond Deviation

Beschreibung

Beyond Deviation is a Canadian deathcore band with a strong emphasis on downtempo and heavy breakdowns, originating from Gatineau, Quebec. Formed in 2014, they established themselves as one of the most ambitious and experimental projects in the Canadian deathcore underground scene.

The band began as a local project to play shows in Ottawa and Montreal. In less than a month, they were already signed by Arrogance Management, one of the most important agencies in the genre at the time. With support from outlets like Chugcore, Pure Deathcore, and Total Deathcore, they released their first EP White Noise (2015), which received excellent reviews thanks to the devastating vocals of their first singer, Guillaume Villeneuve.

Shortly after, Guillaume left the band due to creative differences. He was quickly replaced by Matthew Krawchuk (ex-Suffokate), with whom the band experienced one of their most successful periods: tours across Canada with bands such as Traitors, Falsifier, and The Last Ten Seconds of Life, along with the release of The Plague King (2017).

After Matthew's departure due to distance issues, they brought in Nylist, who became the band's most stable vocalist. With him, they released the conceptual album Dark Passenger (exploring themes of dissociation and anxiety), which marked a change in direction and divided opinions among old-school fans, while attracting new followers. In 2020, they released the split Bridge to Extinction alongside Martyrs.

In late 2020, Guillaume returned to vocals, turning the band into a dual-vocalist project. In 2021, they released the ambitious single Beyond Deviation 400, a 37-minute track that featured 400 vocalists from around the world (including members of AngelMaker, Vulvodynia, Mental Cruelty, etc.), breaking the world record for the most vocalists on a single song. They later released EPs such as Thalassophobia (2022) and Kanashimi (2025), the latter considered by many to be their final work.

Beyond Deviation is characterized by brutal downtempo deathcore, with heavy breakdowns, dark atmospheres, and a wide variety of vocals (deep gutturals, high screams, and experimentation). Cited influences include Whitechapel, Lorna Shore, Traitors, and Immoralist.

Members throughout their career: Guillaume Villeneuve – Vocals (2014–? and later return), Nylist – Vocals, Kris Chayer – Guitar, Roch / Rock Lefebvre Beauchamp – Guitar, Jessie Lefebvre Beauchamp – Drums, Dereck Araujo – Bass (in different periods). Other members: Emmanuel Jean (drums), Sam C., etc.

In September 2023, after nearly 10 years of activity, the band announced their dissolution. “Oni” was their final track and Kanashimi their definitive closing.

Beyond Deviation left a notable mark on the deathcore scene thanks to their creative ambition, especially the 400 vocalists project, and their ability to reinvent themselves throughout the decade. Their legacy remains alive on platforms like Bandcamp, Spotify, and YouTube.
